Yukon Orienteer to Ski Worlds

I wrote in one of my older posts that I think cross country skiing and orienteering make a good pair. I guess I had better think that because YOA juniors orienteers are quite often also skiers. There has been lots of success, too. Colin Abbott going to Canada Games as just one example.

Dahria Beatty, who has come up through the YOA Junior Program, has just been selected to go to the World Junior Cross Country Skiing Championships. She will be competing at the end of the month in Germany. Here is the blurb from the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club Newsletter.

Two great young Yukon skiers have been given the nod by Cross Country Canada to represent their country in upcoming world championship races. The pair were chosen based on their results in a three race selection series this past week in Quebec.

Dahria Beatty, who has been having a stellar season, will be competing in the World Junior Championships at the end of the month. Dahria has been consistently near the top of the junior women’s’ field in races around the country this season. She posted two 4th place finishes in the junior women’s field in the three race series in Quebec, and has consistently been in the top two in the 15 year old group in the field.

As a side note, the other athlete referred to is Emily Nishikawa for the U23 team, who was also a member of the YOA Junior Program 5 or 6 years ago.

Both World Championships will be held in Hinterzgarten, Germany and begin January 24.

We will find out soon whether Dahria will get to go to World Championships for two different sports in the same year. She has applied to be part of the Junior World Orienteering Championships team for 2010. Selections are to be made at the end of the month.

Have there been any Canadian orienteers who have also competed at World Championships in a different sport?

  1. Are you going to give us an update on what happened at the Championships?

    Thanks

  2. You can check out this update from Dahria that I posted
https://langbakk.wordpress.com/2010/01/28/update-from-dahria/ which highlights an outstanding 25th place in the 5k Classic. I believe she was around 65th in the 10k pursuit. Not sure how the relay went. Thanks for your interest.

NB! Just getting used to the new site so I didn’t do the new post correctly to create a pingback that would appear in the comments here. Sorry.
